During the 1800’s, a fort was constructed in this area in order to control the native Sauk and Meshwaki Indians. The captain supervising the construction of the fort wanted to name it Fort Raccoon, but was eventually instructed to name it Fort Des Moines, which is where the name of the city was later taken from.

It wasn’t long after that that more and more people began settling in and that leads it to where the city is now today.

Today, the general demographic of the city is predominantly white, with small percentages of African Americans, American Indians, Asians, Hispanics, and other races in the mix.

Other attractions include Terrace Hill (which is a must-see for those who appreciate Victorian architecture), Des Moines Botanical Center, Blank Park Zoo, Great Ape Trust, Adventureland Park, Wallace House and so many more.
