Des Moines, Iowa

 The people of Iowa have been flocking toward the city of Des Moines over the past few years; thus, it is now the most populous city in the state.

Let’s start with a little history and a couple of Des Moines facts. Located somewhere in the center of North America, Des Moines, Iowa is a city with quite an interesting historical background. Quite an amusing story can be mentioned in tracking where the name of the city can be attributed to - the city is located where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers meet. During the 1800’s, a fort was constructed in this area in order to control the native Sauk and Meshwaki Indians. The captain supervising the construction of the fort wanted to name it Fort Raccoon, but was eventually instructed to name it Fort Des Moines, which is where the name of the city was later taken from.

It wasn’t long after that that more and more people began settling in and that leads it to where the city is now today.

Today, the general demographic of the city is predominantly white, with small percentages of African Americans, American Indians, Asians, Hispanics, and other races in the mix.
Des Moines businesses include a lot of insurance companies, including Principal Financial Group, which is a Fortune 500 company. Being a capital for financial and insurance corporations, it is not a surprise that more companies are seeking to find their home in the city that is referred to as the “Hartford of the West”.

The growing number of thriving companies being added to Des Moines business listings isn’t the only reason that Des Moines is a city to keep an eye out for.
Its wealthy appreciation for culture and the arts is also something to be taken note of. In fact, Des Moines is referred to be the cultural center of Iowa, sporting a good deal of art and history museums and is home to several performing arts groups. Broadway shows and other live theater performances are often shown in the city’s civic center. There are also months that are dedicated to giving out jazz shows on a daily basis.

Also, one cannot ignore the city’s many attractions and landmarks. One of its most noteworthy landmarks is the Iowa State Capitol, which is said to be one of the most beautiful in the country. Other attractions include Terrace Hill (which is a must-see for those who appreciate Victorian architecture), Des Moines Botanical Center, Blank Park Zoo, Great Ape Trust, Adventureland Park, Wallace House and so many more.

Just taking a walk through the walker-friendly streets of Des Moines, and passing through the beautiful landscaping and historical architecture, is sure to be an enjoyable experience for anyone who can appreciate a good walk through beautiful sights.
